SwissVPN setup guide (SSL VPN / SSTP version) – Ubuntu


This is how to proceed to install SSL VPN / SSTP on LinuxMint 17.1 (Ubuntu 14.04).

Please be aware, that this installs software packages deeply into your operating system requiring root privileges and your should know what you do - all instructions are provided on a best prectice basis without any warranty !

The following informations are based on SSTP client version 1.0.10 (as per 12. April 2016) on a 64 bit system.
Please check on http://iweb.dl.sourceforge.net/project/sstp-client/sstp-client/ for the current version and user either the "amd64" or "386" Debian (.deb) packages depending on your current environment.

Please install packages in the following sequence to avoid dependency problems:

  1. Network Manager Applet must be installed which is usually the case by default
  2. Download and install http://liquidtelecom.dl.sourceforge.net/project/sstp-client/sstp-client/1.0.10/sstp-client_1.0.10-0ubuntu3_amd64.deb

    Now your have installed the SSTP client and have to add SSTP functionality to your Network Manager Applet:
  3. Left click on Network Manager icon in the lower right corner of your screen
  4. Click on "Network Connections"
  5. Click on "Add"
  6. Select "Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol (SSTP)"
  7. Click "Create"
  8. Enter in tab "VPN"-"Gateway": connect-sstp.swissvpn.net
  9. Enter in tab "VPN" - "Optional" - "User name:" the username your received from us
  10. Enter in tab "VPN" - "Optional" - "Password:" the password your received from us
  11. Click in tab "VPN" on "Advanced"
  12. In scroll field "Authentication" select "MSCHAPv2"
  13. Click "OK" and save configuration
  14. Reboot your system
  15. You now should see your new SSTP VPN when left clicking on Network Manager
